2019 Season Updates

Independence Day 2019

July 04, 2019

Sandy Dunham and Kenlyn Nash-Demeter hosted a very enjoyable and informative celebration at the Cheshire Club on July 4th.  As is always the case, PYC members supplied a mouth-watering array of appetizers, side dishes and desserts.  Brats and beverages were supplied by PYC.

Our hosts needed some set-up help and appealed to the membership via an email from Mary Ann Evans. If you arrived at the appointed hour of 8PM on 7/3 to help set up for the party on 7/4, you were almost too late. At 8PM all the tables were already in place. Chairs were flying out of the closets.  There were so many hands on deck, some helpers had time to just stand around and talk. Several helpers had other plans for the 4th, but came anyway. I think I overheard someone say “many hands make light work” more than once.  Thanks to everyone who pitched in.  Not to jump ahead, but tear down went just as quickly.

A color guard presented the flag and we recited the Pledge of Allegiance.  Patriotic music was played during the meal and new member Patt McCarthy won for being the first person to correctly identify 10 of those songs. Guest Kathleen Cooley and Patt shared the prize for the most correct answers on the Fourth of July Facts and Trivia quiz. Bill Gain and Ann Murphy also won prizes. Jim Cromer won for the best red, white and blue outfit, partially improvised from items at hand. Too bad there wasn’t a prize for best socks, because Keith Mohr would have won!

2018 Holiday Party

December 31, 2018

Laura and Steve Fulton hosted PYC members at their Blackberie Hill  home on December 7th for the annual PYC Holiday Party. There was a great turnout of PYC members and everyone had a good time.

As is the custom for most of our parties, members brought appetizers and desserts and the array of goodies was beautiful.  Laura’s dining room table was decked out with elegant silver candelabras and flowers and was very festive. There wasn’t even enough room for all the holiday treats on the table; the sideboard had to handle the overflow.

Not all of the action was in the dining room - members were in small groups all over the Fulton house chatting and catching up and making plans for next year. Social Co-Chair Barb Broadway signed up a few people to host next year’s parties.  If you are interested in hosting one of our Spring/Summer events or in working on a committee to  help with these parties, call Barb Broadway at 630-879-0508. Co-Chairs Barb Broadway and Sandy Dunham have some great ideas for 2019 activities, and will welcome volunteers.

Our first event of 2019 will be the General Meeting in April, so watch for your clever and creative email from Mary Ann Evans for all the details.  Happy New Year to all!

The Abbey Springs Yacht Club trip was wonderful!

August 19, 2018

About 33 PYC members made the trip to Fontana, Wisconsin on August 19th to enjoy lunch at the Abbey Springs Yacht Club. What a beautiful setting! ASYC is housed in a lovely building with a very nice restaurant and bar, fire pit area, private beach and a marina.

There were several officers from ASYC there to welcome us as we arrived, including PYC’s Fred Masco. He and wife Laurie were our hosts for the day, and we really appreciated the fact that they arranged for us to enjoy this beautiful facility. Our tables were set with fresh flowers and our view out the windows was of Geneva Lake.

Vice Commodore Laura Fulton was ready with a PYC burgee for the traditional burgee exchange. Our burgee display will now include one from the Abbey Springs Yacht Club, and we hope our PYC burgee will be displayed as well.

After a delicious Caprese salad with crusty bread, it was time for a “design your own” and made-to-order pasta lunch. There were two chefs manning four burners, somehow keeping everyone’s order straight. We could each choose from three pastas and about 20 different meats and vegetables and three sauces to customize our lunch. Plates of cookies, brownies and other treats were passed around each table. Now, don’t you wish you would’ve been there?

Several members hung around after lunch and enjoyed the Abbey Springs Yacht Club’s outdoor area. A very enjoyable day and well worth the trip. Thanks again, Fred and Laurie Masco!

Independence Day 2018

July 04, 2018

Several PYC members manned the ice cream tent on the Fourth of July.  The parade-goers ended up at the Cheshire Club with their bike and wagons decked out in red, white and blue. We were ready for them and served up lots of ice cream supplied by Colonial Café on Galena Blvd. Colonial also supplied coupons for Prestbury families to enjoy at their next visit to Colonial.

The official PYC party was held at the Cheshire Club later in the day, hosted by Commodore Mike and Social Chair Linda Fielding.  As usual, the food supplied by the membership was fantastic!  The Fourth of July trivia game was tough - we were not allowed to use our phones to find answers.  Many of us racked our brains, collaborated, discussed and ultimately didn't win, but it was fun trying.

The next PYC event is the August 19th lunch outing at Abbey Springs Yacht Club in Fontana, WI, hosted by Fred and Laurie Masco.  You should have received your email invitation, so sign up to go! Prestbury Yacht Club and Abbey Springs Yacht Club will exchange burgees at the event.  Hope to see you there!

The Memorial Day 2018 party is in the books!

May 28, 2018

Sixty eight members and guests gathered at the Cheshire Club on May 28th for PYC’s annual Memorial Day celebration, hosted by Mary and Walt Kreitling.

After dinner, there was a contest to raise money for Honor Flights, an organization that pays for flights for veterans to Washington D.C. so that they can visit the memorial erected in their honor.  Honor Flights flies veterans of WWII, Korea and Vietnam at no charge, but the guardians who accompany the vets have to pay their own way, which is usually about $450.00.  PYC raised a total of $1,163.00 to fund flights for the guardians!  Thanks to everyone who contributed.

The next PYC event takes place on the Fourth of July.  PYC will give out ice cream from Colonial Cafe in Aurora at the Cheshire Club where the kids’ parade ends.  Come out about 10AM and see all the bikes decorated in red, white and blue and have some ice cream! Look for your invitation for the PYC gathering in the mail in June.

PYC Lake Geneva outing

July 16, 2017

Thirty nine members of the Prestbury Yacht Club met at the Lake Geneva Yacht Club on July 15th. The event was organized by Marty Boergadine and included lunch at the Yacht Club and a boat ride on Geneva Lake.

The Lake Geneva Yacht Club is housed in a beautiful new building right on the lake.  Members who arrived early were able to watch sailboat races from the balcony overlooking the lake.  After lunch, Marty explained that for every 20 tickets purchased for the boat ride, the cruise line gives a free ticket.  Marty had all of our names in a hat and Rich Carlson drew Gene Evans' name as the winner.

We were able to do a burgee exchange with LGYC, so look for their burgee in the PYC display case at the Prestbury office.  We hope they will display ours at their club.

We all met up again at the Riviera Boat Docks and boarded the Walworth for our ride at 3:15.  We got rained on a little for a short time, and then the sun came out and stayed out.  We learned all about the wealthy Chicagoans who built what they called cottages (mansions to us!) on Geneva Lake years ago.  Old money names like Wrigley, Swift, Vicks and Maytag were mentioned, along with modern day names like Driehaus and Mecum.

Thanks to Mary Boergadine for heading up this fun filled afternoon.  It was great fun - we are now looking forward to our party on Labor Day.  Before we know it, it will be time for the Commodore's dinner!

The 2017 Independence Day events were a success!

Colonial Café on Galena Blvd in Aurora generously donated 150 ice cream cups and lots of coupons to PYC for our July 4th ice cream tent. Lucy and Bill Gain again loaned their tent so ice cream could be dispensed in the shade.  Bill and Former Commodores Jim and Cyndi Miller and their niece MacKenzie manned the tent.  When the parade of children and bikes dressed in red, white and blue arrived at the Cheshire Club, many decided to go with the "eat dessert first" idea and stopped by the ice cream tent immediately. Some of those who waited had to be turned away - those 150 cups went fast!

Float Boat Captain George Hauser was in charge of rides around Lake Prestbury.  George reported that he made several cruises around the lake with kids and parents on board. As a PYC member, you have access to the float boat. Contact George Hauser and check your PYC Directory for more information.

Our hosts for the party at the Cheshire Club were Linda and Mike Fielding.  This was their first time hosting and they did a wonderful job!  Good food, good company and lots of members dressed in red, white and blue.

Next up is our Labor Day Party on Monday, September 4,hosted by the Ochsenschlagers, the Broadways and the Atwells.  Contact Sue Ochsenschlager to volunteer to help with set up, buying supplies, clean up or whatever! Invitations will be mailed out in August.
